Google Shopping ads management
Shopping ads put your product, price and photo in front of a buyer before they click, so the product feed decides much of the result. As a Google Shopping ads agency for Australian online stores, we fix the product data first, then build Shopping and Performance Max campaigns around margin and report them against the return you agreed.
In short
- Shopping ads are matched to searches using your Merchant Center product data, not keywords, so feed quality comes first.
- We run standard Shopping and Performance Max side by side where it makes sense, with clear rules about which campaign covers which products.
- Campaigns are split by margin, stock and category, so budget follows profit rather than revenue alone.
- Shopping was part of the channel mix behind two of our published results: Mining Store's return on ad spend rising from 1.7x to 6.2x, and YCL Jewels' 181% increase in sales.
- Ad spend is paid to Google directly; management runs month to month with KPIs agreed in writing.
Shopping ads are targeted by your feed
Search campaigns start with keywords. Shopping campaigns start with your product data. Google reads the titles, descriptions, categories, prices and identifiers you submit through Merchant Center, decides which searches each product is eligible for, and shows the ad with the product photo, title, price and store name.
That makes the feed the targeting. A title that leaves out the words people search, a missing GTIN or a wrong product category will hold a product back however the bids are set, and Google's own Merchant Center guidance lists incorrect identifiers and categories among the common causes of disapprovals and limited eligibility.
What we fix in the product feed
We audit the feed against Google's product data specification before touching a campaign. The usual work is unglamorous: titles rewritten to lead with what buyers search — brand, product type, size, material, model — accurate categories and identifiers, variants such as colour and size grouped correctly, image quality, and prices that match the landing page.
Where a store platform cannot produce the right data on its own, we add a supplemental feed or rules in Merchant Center instead of editing hundreds of products by hand. Custom labels mark margin bands, stock levels, best sellers and seasonal ranges, so campaigns can be split on them later.
Standard Shopping or Performance Max
Performance Max reaches YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail and Maps from one campaign, and for retailers it runs on the same Merchant Center feed. That reach is useful when an account has clean conversion data and enough volume to learn from. It is less useful when nobody can see which products or placements are earning the money.
Standard Shopping gives more control over which products receive budget and which searches trigger them. In many accounts we run both: Performance Max for proven products with healthy margins, standard Shopping for new ranges, tests and products that need tighter control, with brand searches handled separately so they are not reported as new demand. Our Google Ads management page compares every campaign type side by side.
Budgets that follow margin
Two products with the same price can carry very different margins. If a campaign treats them the same, it can post a healthy return on ad spend while making little profit. We group products by margin band and stock position, set return targets for each group, and move budget toward the products that earn it.
Search terms still matter in Shopping, even without keywords. We review the terms that triggered your products every week, add negatives where the match is wrong, and feed what we learn back into product titles.
Two results where Shopping was part of the mix
Mining Store, an industrial ecommerce business, moved from 1.7x to 6.2x return on ad spend in 90 days. Shopping was one of four channels, alongside SEO, Google Ads search campaigns and Meta Ads, and the feed and product-level segmentation were among the first things rebuilt. The Mining Store case study sets out what changed.
YCL Jewels, a jewellery brand, increased sales by 181% with SEO and Google Shopping working the same commercial terms, measured in Shopify and GA4. Neither result came from Shopping alone, and we would not present it that way.
Free product listings and organic visibility
The same Merchant Center feed also powers free product listings on Google, so feed work pays twice: once in paid Shopping and again in unpaid placements. We set up and monitor free listings alongside paid campaigns, and our ecommerce SEO team makes sure the product and category pages behind them are worth landing on.
Shopping campaigns for Perth retailers
Western Australia runs on UTC+8 with no daylight saving, so ad schedules built in eastern time drift by two or three hours across the year. For Perth retailers we set schedules in Perth time, plan around WA's own public holidays, such as WA Day in June and the late-September King's Birthday, and separate local pick-up or WA-only delivery products where the business offers them. More on paid search in the west is on our Google Ads Perth page.
How Shopping performance is reported
Each month you see revenue, return on ad spend and cost by product group, not only for the account as a whole, along with which products were held back by feed problems and what we changed. Results are checked against the KPIs agreed in writing before launch. If the agreed KPIs are not met within 90 days, we keep working at no additional charge until they are.
