There is no single price for plumber marketing in Australia, because the cost is set by how competitive your city is, how many suburbs you want to be found in, and whether you are paying for clicks on top of the work itself. What you can do is understand the levers, so you can read a quote and know whether the number in front of you is reasonable for the job you are asking someone to do.

This guide covers what drives the cost, how to think about budget by crew size, what the first 90 days should produce, and the questions that separate a serious proposal from a pretty one.

The four things that actually drive the cost

Market competition. Emergency plumbing is one of the most contested categories in Australian search. Metro Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane cost more than regional centres for the same work, because there are more plumbers bidding on the same keywords and more established businesses holding the map pack positions you want. The gap between a capital city and a regional town is real and it shows up in both ad costs and the amount of SEO work needed to move.

Geographic footprint. Ranking in one suburb is a small job. Ranking across thirty suburbs is thirty small jobs, because each one needs its own page, its own local proof and its own internal links. If your quote is low and the scope says "service area pages", ask how many and what goes on each. This is the single most common place where scope and price come apart.

Channel mix. SEO is a fee for work. Google Ads is a fee for work plus the media spend, which goes to Google, not the agency. Local Services Ads charge per lead. If you are comparing two quotes and one includes media spend in the headline number, you are not comparing the same thing.

Starting position. A plumbing business with a fast website, a claimed and complete Google Business Profile and a steady flow of recent reviews needs less remedial work than one starting with a five-year-old site and eleven reviews. Some of the first months of any engagement are spent fixing foundations rather than building on them, and that is worth paying for.

    Budgeting by crew size

Rather than a dollar figure, think in terms of what the business needs to keep busy.

Sole trader or one van. You need to be found in your own suburb and the ones next to it, and you need the phone to be answered. The right spend is small and narrow: Google Business Profile done properly, a handful of genuine suburb pages, review generation, and either a small ads budget for emergency hours or none at all if the calls are already coming. Spending broadly at this size wastes money on jobs you cannot get to.

Two to five vans. This is where the maths changes. You have capacity to fill and idle time costs you, so paid search starts to earn its place alongside organic. The budget needs to cover a wider suburb footprint, an ads account that runs after hours, and enough content and review work to keep the map pack positions once you win them.

Six vans and up. At this size you are usually running residential and commercial work at once, with different sales cycles and different buyers. Budget needs to cover two distinct programs — the emergency and residential engine, and a slower commercial and body-corporate program — plus proper call tracking so you can tell which one is producing the revenue.

Whatever the size, the useful test is not the monthly fee. It is the cost of a booked job compared with the margin on that job. A plumbing business that knows its average job value and its close rate can work out very quickly whether a channel is paying for itself.

What the first 90 days should show

Ninety days is not long enough to win a competitive city for "emergency plumber", and any agency that promises it is selling you something. It is long enough to see leading indicators move.

    • Google Business Profile fully built out, with services, service areas, hours, photos and a review request process running.
    • A measurable lift in calls and direction requests from the profile, which is the closest thing to a real-time signal in local search.
    • Suburb and service pages published, indexed and starting to pick up impressions for the terms they target.
    • Call tracking in place, so phone enquiries are attributed rather than guessed at.
    • If ads are running, a search terms report that is getting cleaner each week and a cost per booked job that is trending in the right direction.

What you should not expect in 90 days is a settled ranking position across a whole city, or a stable cost per lead. Both take longer, and both move around while the account is being cleaned up.

    How to compare agency quotes

Most quotes are hard to compare because they describe different things using the same words. Force them onto the same page with a few questions.

What exactly is the deliverable each month? "SEO" is not a deliverable. Pages published, profile posts, review requests sent, technical fixes shipped and ad account changes are deliverables. Ask for the list.

Is media spend included or separate? Get it in writing. An agency fee plus ad spend is a very different commitment from a bundled figure.

Who owns the accounts? Your Google Ads account, Google Business Profile, website, domain and analytics should be in your name with the agency granted access. If an agency will not do this, that is the answer to a different question.

What is the KPI and is it in writing? A serious proposal names the outcome it is being measured on before the work starts, not after. Ours are agreed in writing and backed by a 90-day KPI guarantee, with no lock-in contract.

What happens to the work if you leave? Pages built on your own domain stay with you. Pages built on an agency-owned platform do not. Ask.

Where the money is usually wasted

Three patterns come up repeatedly in plumbing accounts we audit. The first is broad-match keywords with no negative list, which buys clicks from people looking for parts, DIY instructions and apprenticeships. The second is thin suburb pages, produced in bulk from a template, which do not rank and dilute the pages that could. The third is paying for lead-generation platforms while the business has no review process running, so the same job that would come free through the map pack is bought at a margin instead.

None of these are fixed by increasing the budget. They are fixed by narrowing the scope and doing fewer things properly, which is usually where a plumbing account improves fastest.

Getting a number for your business

The honest way to price this is to look at the account first. What does the Google Business Profile look like, how many suburbs do you actually service, what does the site load like on a phone, what is in the search terms report, and how many jobs a week do you need to add to fill the vans. Those answers set the scope, and the scope sets the price.

If you want the detail on how we build the program, start with our plumber marketing and SEO page or the wider digital marketing for tradies hub. If you are weighing up where to spend first, how to get more plumbing leads ranks the channels by effort and lead quality, and Google Ads for plumbers covers what paid search costs you in practice.

Don't take our word for it. Here's what business owners and marketing directors say about working with Odin Digital.

    100% five-star reviews on Trustpilot & Google

    “Can't recommend enough”

Lucas & the agency is honestly one of the best things that ever happened to my business. When I first started working with him for SEO and ads, he went way beyond that - dropping knowledge on pricing, funnels, and how to actually structure things to scale. I was doing $20k months on my own, then after working with Lucas on a new product launch, I was averaging over $100k a month. Mostly thanks to advice I never even paid for. Five years later, he still runs my ads and I still call him for guidance. If you're serious about your business, working with Lucas & Odin Digital is a high leverage move.
