Klaviyo agency for Australian ecommerce brands
Most Klaviyo accounts we audit were connected to Shopify, given a welcome email and left there. We build the whole system — flows, segments, SMS and deliverability — for how Australians shop and the rules they are marketed under.
In short
- Klaviyo is built around the data your store already holds; its value depends on how well that data is connected and used.
- We build the core flows first because they respond to buying signals and keep earning without weekly sends.
- Segmentation is based on purchase behaviour, not just sign-up date, so loyal customers and first-time browsers get different messages.
- Campaign calendars follow the Australian sale year, including Father's Day in September and the end of financial year in June.
- Every build meets the Spam Act 2003. The wider programme sits under our email marketing agency service.
What Klaviyo does that a newsletter tool does not
Klaviyo is less an email sender than a customer database that happens to send email and SMS. Every profile carries what that person has browsed, added to cart, bought, returned and opened, and every one of those events can trigger a message or define a segment.
That is why it suits ecommerce and why it is so often underused. A brand that treats Klaviyo like a newsletter tool — one list, one weekly campaign — pays for a platform built to do far more. The revenue sits in the automation and the segmentation, and both depend on the data being connected properly in the first place.
Klaviyo pricing is based on the number of active profiles you hold, so list hygiene has a direct cost as well as a deliverability benefit. Suppressing profiles that never engage keeps both in check.
The Shopify connection, and what usually goes wrong
Most of our Australian Klaviyo clients run on Shopify, and the integration between the two is deep: customers, orders, products, collections and on-site behaviour flow into Klaviyo automatically. When it is set up well, you can build browse abandonment, product recommendations and purchase-based segments without custom development.
When it is set up badly, the problems are quiet. Consent collected at Shopify checkout does not sync, so customers who opted in never receive marketing. The on-site tracking snippet is missing from part of the theme, so browse abandonment never fires. Or an old app is still sending duplicate abandoned-cart emails alongside Klaviyo's.
Our first job on any account is an integration audit that checks each of these, because every flow and segment built afterwards depends on the data being right. Brands on other platforms, such as WooCommerce or BigCommerce, get the same check against their own integration.
The flows every Australian store should run
Flows are the automated sequences that respond to what a customer does. We build them in order of how strong the buying signal is: abandoned checkout first, then abandoned cart and browse abandonment, then welcome, post-purchase and winback.
Each flow is split by behaviour rather than sent identically to everyone. A welcome flow treats a subscriber who has already bought differently from one who has not. A post-purchase flow for a first order focuses on reassurance and delivery; for a repeat customer it can move straight to cross-sell. Winback timing is set from your own repurchase cycle, not a generic delay.
Once the core is live, we add replenishment for consumables, back-in-stock and price-drop alerts, review requests timed after delivery and a sunset flow that retires unengaged profiles.
Segments built on what customers buy
Good segmentation is what makes campaigns feel personal rather than broadcast. In Klaviyo we build segments from purchase behaviour — first-time buyers, repeat buyers, lapsed customers, high-value customers, category buyers — combined with engagement, so the least engaged profiles are sent less often.
Klaviyo's predictive analytics add another layer once a store has enough order history: predicted customer lifetime value, expected next order date and churn risk. We use those to decide who gets early access to a sale, who gets a winback incentive and who is likely to buy at full price anyway.
The result is fewer, better-targeted sends. That protects margin, because discounts go only to the people who need a reason, and protects deliverability, because inbox providers reward mail that people open and click.
Planning for the Australian sale year, not the American one
Much of the Klaviyo advice online is written for the United States, and its calendar does not match ours. Father's Day here falls in September, not June. The end of financial year in June drives a sales season of its own. Boxing Day and the summer sales land in the middle of our holidays, and Click Frenzy sits alongside Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
We plan each of these a quarter ahead: early-access sign-up flows, VIP segments, templates and SMS reminders ready before the peak. Pricing is shown GST-inclusive, as Australian consumers expect, and shipping cut-offs for Christmas are built around Australian delivery times, so no customer is promised a parcel that cannot arrive.
SMS, the Spam Act and staying out of the spam folder
Klaviyo SMS works in Australia, and used sparingly it is effective for launches, restocks and last-chance reminders. Both email and SMS fall under the Spam Act 2003, which requires consent, clear sender identification and a working unsubscribe. We collect SMS consent separately and keep frequency low, because SMS opt-outs are fast and permanent.
Deliverability is the other half of compliance. Since Gmail and Yahoo introduced bulk sender requirements in 2024, brands need authenticated sending domains with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, and one-click unsubscribe. We set those up, warm new domains gradually and monitor spam complaints so a strong programme is not undone by mail that never reaches the inbox.
What to expect from a Klaviyo build with us
A Klaviyo engagement starts with an audit: integration, consent, existing flows, list health and deliverability. From that we write a build plan in priority order, with the flows likely to recover the most revenue first. Templates are designed to your brand and tested across mail clients and dark mode before anything goes live.
After launch, we move to a monthly rhythm of campaigns, flow testing and reporting on revenue from email and SMS, repeat purchase rate and list health. Klaviyo also works best alongside acquisition: ecommerce SEO and paid social bring new visitors, and Klaviyo turns them into repeat customers. Sydney service and ecommerce businesses can also see our email marketing agency Sydney page.
Templates that work on the phone in your customer's hand
Most Australian ecommerce email is read on a phone, often in dark mode, sometimes with images switched off. Templates designed on a desktop screen and never tested in those conditions lose clarity fast: text disappears against dark backgrounds, buttons become too small to tap and the offer ends up below the fold.
We build a small library of modular Klaviyo templates for your brand — campaign, flow, product feature and plain-text styles — and test each across the major mail clients before it goes live. Dynamic product blocks pull directly from your Shopify catalogue, so recommendations and abandoned items always show the right image and price.
Plain-text and lightly designed emails have their place too. A founder's note or a service update often performs better looking like a personal email than a promotion, and we test both styles against each other.
Moving to Klaviyo without losing what you have built
Many Australian brands come to Klaviyo from Mailchimp, Shopify Email or an older platform. The risk in any migration is not the technical move; it is losing consent records, suppression lists and sender reputation along the way.
We migrate profiles with their consent status intact, bring across unsubscribes and hard bounces so no one who opted out is contacted again, and warm the new sending domain gradually rather than emailing the whole list on day one. Existing flows are rebuilt, not copied, because the migration is the best chance to fix what was not working.
Where historical order data is available, we sync it so segmentation and predictive analytics have something to work with from the start.
How we report Klaviyo performance honestly
Klaviyo's default attribution credits an email with a sale if the customer opened or clicked it within a set window before buying. That is useful, but it can overstate email's contribution when the same customer also clicked a paid ad or would have bought anyway.
We report Klaviyo revenue alongside total store revenue, new versus returning customer revenue and repeat purchase rate, so you can see whether email is growing the business or simply taking credit for sales that were happening already. Where volume allows, we use holdout groups on key flows to measure their true lift.
Open rates are reported only as a health check. Apple's Mail Privacy Protection pre-loads images and inflates opens, so clicks, orders and revenue are the numbers we manage to.
Which Australian brands get the most from Klaviyo
Klaviyo pays back fastest for Australian brands with repeat-purchase products — skincare, supplements, coffee, pet supplies, fashion basics — where the flows and segments can bring customers back again and again. Brands selling one-off, high-value items benefit too, mainly through browse and checkout abandonment and long consideration sequences.
It suits brands less when order volume is still very low or the catalogue changes so rarely that there is little to say. In those cases we may recommend a simpler setup until the store grows, and tell you so on the strategy call rather than selling you a build you do not need yet.
Either way, the goal is the same: an owned channel that makes each customer you acquire worth more over time.
